How To Repair A Temperature Pressure Relief Valve

Probably the most important part of your hot water heater is the temperature pressure relief valve. When these systems suffer from overpressure, they can explode causing damage to your building and anyone who happens to be nearby when it happens. A temperature and pressure relief valve makes sure that the water stays at a safe temperature and that the pressure does not exceed the limit considered safe by the manufacturer. When the pressure or temperature gets too high, the valve will open, releasing water and pressure until the optimum level is achieved once again.

First of all, it is important to be able to determine if a malfunction has indeed taken place. One sure sign of trouble is when water has been leaking from the pipe connected to the temperature pressure relief valve. This is a sign of weak valves that need to be replaced. The thermostat could also be set to too high of a temperature which could also be causing an increase in pressure.

You should also test your temperature and pressure relief valve from time to time. This can be accomplished by lifting the test lever. First, turn the gas and/or the electricity off before performing this test. Also, wear gloves because the water will probably be quite hot. Make sure that you have set down a bucket underneath the pipe because water will flow out once the lever has been lifted. The water should shut off automatically once you pull the lever back up; if not, then this is the sign of a problem and the valve should be replaced.

So, what to do if you have determined that your temperature pressure relief valve needs to be replaced? You can find a replacement at most home improvement stores. Your current valve should have a data plate/tag that will tell you the specifications so you know what to buy. Before beginning the project, make sure the gas/electricity is turned off. You may even want to turn off the main water supply.

Next, wearing safety goggles, use the temperature and pressure relief valve to drain the water out of the tank, but only to the elevation of the valve itself. Now it is time to remove the old relief pipe and valve. This can easily be accomplished by using a pipe wrench. Because the equipment may be hot, it is a good idea to wear gloves during this process. Once this has been accomplished it is time to install the new temperature pressure relief valve. Cover the threads of the pipe and valve with Teflon tape and simply screw them into position. It must be tight because if not this could lead to problems in the future. Once these steps have been completed your hot water heater should be safe and efficient once again.
